Misaki: I was a little confused yesterday because there were no direction signs at the venue.
Ken: I’m sorry. I thought I had taken responsibility for printing them, but I thought you were in charge.
Misaki: I see. It sounds like there was a misunderstanding. During the preparations, it was frustrating not knowing who was doing what.
Ken: I’m sorry if you felt blamed. I also failed to confirm things properly.
Misaki: I’m not trying to blame you. I also handled the assignment verbally. Shall we coordinate our division of roles for next time?
Ken: Definitely. I’ll take responsibility for printing and bringing them to the venue. Could you check the content?
Misaki: Yes. Also, let’s keep in contact the day before. If we make a checklist, we can probably prevent this from happening again.
Ken: Sounds good. Let’s turn this misunderstanding into an improvement for next time.
Practice prompts
- Replace 案内の張り紙 with 参加者名簿 (participant list) and explain a different preparation problem.

- 折り合いをつける is useful when neither side gets everything they want, but both accept the result.

Practice dialogue
Situation: Two siblings are planning a family celebration. One wants a large, late dinner; the other is worried about an elderly relative’s health and their own limited energy.
Misaki: What do you think about everyone eating out together until late for this year’s birthday party?
Ken: It sounds fun, but to be honest, I feel a little weighed down by the idea. I think going out for a long time would be a burden for Grandma too.
Misaki: I see. Since it’s a special birthday, I wanted everyone to adjust to the plan.
Ken: I understand how you feel. But Grandma might find it hard to say what she really thinks and end up pushing herself.
Misaki: That’s true—she might say “I’m fine” just to be considerate. Then shall we ask her what she wants?
Ken: Yes. Let’s hear everyone’s circumstances and then find a compromise.
Misaki: If Grandma wants to stay home, how about having a meal at home during the day and wrapping up in the late afternoon?
Ken: That way Grandma won’t have to overexert herself, and we can all celebrate together. I’d appreciate that plan too.
Misaki: It’s settled, then. I may have been prioritizing only what I wanted. Thanks for talking to me about it.
Ken: Thank you too. Don’t hold back—please keep telling me how you really feel.

2. Practice Dialogue
Context: Sato (a creative director focusing on quality) and Tanaka (a project lead focusing on deadlines) are discussing a delayed feature launch for their shared project. Tension has arisen because both feel their goals are being sidelined.
(Sato):
Tanaka-san, konkai no dezain no kaitei ni tsuite desu ga, dakyou shitakunai kimochi ga atte... Mada saibu no shitsu ni nattoku ga itte inai ndesu.
(Tanaka-san, regarding the design revision this time, I really don't want to compromise... I'm still not satisfied with the quality of the details.)
田中 (Tanaka):
Sato-san no ito wa yoku wakarimasu. Demo, sukejuuru ga oobaba ni okurete ite, shoujiki kochira to shite wa kanari aseri o kanjite iru ndesu.
(I understand your intention, Sato-san. But the schedule is significantly delayed, and frankly, I'm feeling quite anxious on my end.)
(Sato):
Soutatta ndesu ne. Shimekiri o mamoru taisetsusa mo rikai shite iru tsumori desu ga, kuoriti o sageru to yuutaa ni hibikanai no de wa to huan de.
(I see. I do intend to understand the importance of keeping deadlines, but I'm worried that lowering the quality won't resonate with users.)
田中 (Tanaka):
Otagai no yuusen jun'i ni sukoshi surechigai ga atta mitai desu ne. Boku mo aseru amari, Sato-san no kodawari ni hairyo ga tarimasen deshita.
(It seems we had a slight misalignment in our priorities. In my rush, I also failed to be considerate enough of your attention to detail.)
(Sato):
Iie, watashi koso zentai ga miete imasen deshita.
(No, I was the one missing the bigger picture. How can we meet halfway on this?)
田中 (Tanaka):
Mazu wa hissu no kinou dake o yotei doori ririisu shite, dezain no saibu wa tsugi no appudeeto de taiou suru to iu no wa dou de shou? Dakyooten to shite kentou dekimasu ka?
(How about we release just the essential features on schedule, and polish the design details in the next update? Could we consider that as a middle ground?)
(Sato):
Naruhodo! Sore nara nouki o mamoritsutsu, hinshitsu mo iji dekisou desu. Teian shite kurete arigatou gozaimasu.
(I see! That way we can stick to the deadline while maintaining quality in the long run. Thank you for making that proposal.)
3. Key Takeaway & Application Tip
When handling creative or priority disagreements in Japanese, state your feelings or concerns using softer hedges like 〜気がして (I feel that...) or 〜と不安で (I'm worried that...), followed by asking directly for compromise using 歩み寄る (ayumiyoru) or proposing a 妥協点 (dakyooten).
