It’s so easy to assume that if a wooden tool is tough enough to stir boiling soup or take heavy chopping, it can easily handle a quick run in the dishwasher. But wood behaves fundamentally differently from ceramic, glass, or stainless steel.

To understand why, it helps to look at what wood actually is: a dense structure made of microscopic, tube-like cells that spent decades transporting water up a tree. Even long after wood is harvested and turned into a spatula, those cellular pathways retain their structure. They act like millions of tiny sponges.

When you put wooden items in the dishwasher, you subject them to a brutal two-phase process:

  1. Deep Swelling: High-pressure hot water floods the microscopic cells over a prolonged cycle, forcing the wood fibers to absorb water and expand significantly.
  2. Rapid Shrinking: The high-heat drying cycle then bakes that moisture back out far faster than natural air drying ever would.

Because wood fibers expand and shrink unevenly along the grain, this intense swell-and-bake cycle creates massive internal stress. That stress is what warps flat cutting boards, splits spoons down the middle, and causes the outer grain to lift, giving the surface a rough, fuzzy texture.

If you're washing a cutting board made from glued wooden strips, there’s an extra problem: the combination of harsh alkaline detergent and scalding water breaks down the water-resistant adhesive, causing the board to snap apart right along the seams.

The practical fix:

Wash wooden utensils by hand shortly after use using warm water and a splash of mild dish soap. Don't leave them soaking in a full sink! Wipe them dry with a towel immediately, and let them air-dry standing upright so air circulates around both sides.

If your wooden tools start looking pale or dry, rub them with a small amount of food-grade mineral oil. The oil penetrates those microscopic cellular pores, acting as a natural barrier that stops water from soaking in next time.
