Chlorine bleach is primarily composed of water and sodium hypochlorite. It is fantastic at disinfecting non-porous surfaces and stripping away dark pigments.

However, materials like drywall, wood, ceiling tiles, and grout are filled with microscopic pores. Mold doesn't just sit on top of these materials; it grows deep, root-like structures called hyphae inside them.

Because of its chemical structure, the chlorine molecule in bleach is too large to penetrate those tight microscopic pores. When you spray bleach on drywall:

  • The chlorine stays on the surface, killing the top layer of mold and stripping its dark color so it looks clean.
