Divide the coins into groups of 3, 3, and 2.

First weighing: Put 3 coins on the left and 3 coins on the right.

• If the sides balance, the lighter coin is among the 2 left out.
• If one side rises, the lighter coin is among the 3 coins on that side.

Second weighing:

• If the lighter coin is among 2, weigh those 2 against each other. The side that rises holds the lighter coin.
• If it is among 3, weigh 1 coin against 1 coin. If they balance, the unweighed coin is lighter. Otherwise, the coin on the rising side is lighter.
